History
New Beginnings Church was founded June 12, 1998 by Elder Damon Cannon as the Contention Christian Fellowship Church of God in Christ as a part of the Eastern Missouri First Jurisdiction. Pastor Cannon was installed by Dr. William Bird, Sr. (Administrative Assistant to Bishop R. J. Ward). The church's motto was "Contending for the Faith" as found in Jude 3. The church experienced early growth and was involved in the community with groups like the "JESUS GANG" youth choir in St. Louis city. Contention was built upon strong bible study groups and moved into their first building on Lafayette Square where they shared a sanctuary at the time of its founding.
Contention later sought to expand into its own building and went on a journey to 3 different buildings before arriving at what they thought to be their new home and the church changed its name to New Beginnings COGIC. The members worked hard to make improvements to the building based on an agreement with the owners that was eventually broken. This left the church again with no place to go and the membership very discouraged including the pastor.
Pastor Cannon went to Fountain Temple COGIC to seek refuge under the leadership of Superintendent Nathaniel Smith. Pastor Cannon was able to heal and grow under Supt. Smith's tutelage and in 2006, with the blessing of his new pastor, Elder Cannon started back out to rebuild the church. The name "New Beginnings" became more relevant than before and the focus became creating a place, an atmosphere where people can make a fresh start on life. By establishing an outreach for the unreached, the church began to grow again through strong bible study classes and fellowship.
The church leased a building in Florissant, MO and continued to experience growth. In a strange exchange of events, an opportunity arose for the pastor to obtain an unconventional location that would become "the Cross Christian Entertainment Center". This new ministry allowed the church to continue while we birthed many other ministries and showcased gospel entertainment from throughout the St. Louis area.
New Beginnings Church is now continuing to grow and serve abroad in the body of Christ. As the mother church of the United Body of Christ Ministries, New B members have helped to birth and develop many churches and ministries and undergird other efforts in the body of Christ. Quietly the church continues to be effective a being a great place to get a fresh start on Life and sharing the love of Christ to the world.
